A wave of batteries hits the aquaculture industry

The aquaculture industry is predicted to grow by a factor of six towards 2050. That calls for battery technology that can help solve urgent climate and energy challenges.

There is a big shift towards zero-emission operations in aquaculture, driving a strong demand for battery storage solutions. A new generation of battery technology is emerging, simplifying the green transition in the aquaculture industry.

With a tailored battery solution Hagal Ocean is on a quest to make batteries the first choice on workboats and fish farms.

Rugged industrial batteries

Traditionally, large rates of diesel consumption has been required to operate a fish farm and its feed barges. A climate hazard that has been challenging to minimise due to the high costs of climate solutions, complex use cases and lack of technological expertise.

Hagal Ocean´s ambition is to solve this headache, penetrating the aquaculture market with tailored battery solutions. The quality and durability of these batteries ensure a lower cost per cycle, making it an investment for the future.

– The aquaculture market asks for retrofit systems that are robust and can cope with a challenging work environment. The economical viability of batteries is always questioned. With cutting-edge technology development, combined with the decreasing costs of Lithium-Ion batteries, this is becoming an attractive alternative, and even more so – the obvious choice, says Øystein Kjæreng, Hagal Ocean’s CEO.

– In addition to economical safety, physical safety is a major concern at sea. Our batteries are DNV certified, built on the more stable LFP chemistry and are designed to meet the highest standards for safety with features like built-in fire supression and waterproof insulation. They can take a lot of beating, Øystein explains.

Flexible solutions

Many breeding facilities are remote and grid connection is very expensive. They are depending on diesel aggregators and often struggle to see the profitability in renewable energy options.

– The beauty of batteries is that they are a very flexible green source of energy that can replace or limit the use of fossil fuels as fully electric or hybrid solutions. They reduce emissions and ocean noise from diesel aggregators, and can also be combined with solar panels and wind turbines, depending on topography and working conditions, Øystein says.

Lifetime economics

To meet the ever-growing demand for batteries, Hagal Ocean is now scaling up deliveries to fishfarms and workboats. The ambition is to use the Norwegian aquaculture market as a stepping stone for internationalisation.

The beauty of batteries is that they are a very flexible green source of energy that can replace or limit the use of fossil fuels as fully electric or hybrid solutions.

–We are in collaboration with strong partners in the battery value chain, building expertise to support customers through the whole process – from purchase or leasing to implementation and maintenance. At the end of the battery’s lifecycle, we take back the battery to make sure it is reused in second-life applications or recycled, depending on the condition of the battery cells, Øystein says.
